Father of the Year Awards 2008

Lappy One of Four Fathers Recognized by American Diabetes Association

The American Diabetes Association and the Denver Father’s Day Council hosted the 2008 Father of the Year Awards on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Denver. This year’s honorees included Ken Ellgen, XCel Energy, Executive Director (Retired), Mark Hellerstein, Chairman of the Board/Director, St. Mary Land & Exploration Company, Ian Laperriere, Alternate Captain, Colorado Avalanche, and Mike Shaw, Founder and Owner Mike Shaw Automotive, four outstanding fathers in the Colorado community.

“We are proud to honor these four exceptional fathers who have demonstrated the ability to balance their personal lives, while achieving a high-level of success in their careers.” said Perri Dombroski, Associate Director at the American Diabetes Association. “All of these fathers are very deserving of this award”.

Colorado Special Hockey Clinic

 On March 27, 2008, Ian Laperriere and John-Michael Liles hosted a Colorado Special Hockey practice as part of the Avalanche Player Clinic Program. 

Colorado Special Hockey exists for the enrichment of developmentally disabled individuals. The game of hockey is used to develop within each player the characteristics that will help the player be more successful inside and outside a hockey environment. 

Laperriere and Liles participated in instruction and coaching throughout the hour-long practice for 30 developmentally disabled hockey players. 

Upon completion of the practice, Laperriere and Liles signed autographs and took pictures with the players.

St. Baldrick's Day 2008

 On March 14, 2008, Ian Laperriere participated in the St. Baldrick's Foundation Event at Fado Irish Pub in Denver.  He and teammates Ben Guite and John-Michael Liles, along with Avalanche Assistant Coach Tony Granato, had their heads shaved to help raise awareness and funds for children's cancer.

On Friday, Dec. 14, players and coaches from the Colorado Avalanche brought smiles and holiday cheer to some very special children when they made their annual holiday
visit to the Children’s Hospital.
Every December, the players and coaches visit the young patients at The Children’s Hospital in an effort to lift their spirits during the holiday season. Friday’s visit marked the 11th year of this Avalanche tradition, and was the team’s first visit to the new Children’s Hospital in Aurora.
The players and coaches spent time in patient rooms, distributed Avalanche teddy bears, signed autographs, took pictures with the children and their families and, most importantly, talked with the kids and helped bring them and their families joy for the holidays.

Av For A Day

The Colorado Avalanche is proud to present the Av for a Day program sponsored by Conoco and The Children's Hospital.  The program recognizes middle school students who are well-rounded representatives of their school and community.  The winners experience a once-in-a-lifetime day filled with behind the scenes Avs activities.

On Wednesday October 10, Avalanche players Ian Laperriere and Ben Guite joined students from Denver International School at Le Central French restaurant as part of Eat Right!, the nutrition program of the Colorado Avalanche.

Sponsored by The Children's Hospital, Eat Right! promotes healthy eating habits among middle school students by providing nutritional information to help improve health and wellness.

The event was unique in the sense that Laperriere and Guite discussed nutrition and wellness in French with students in the French immersion program at Denver International School. The discussion was followed by a meal, while the players also signed autographs for the students at the end of the event.

Avs Talk Health

Avalanche players Ian Laperriere and Peter Budaj spoke to Lone Tree Elementary’s kindergarten class on August 28 about exercising and eating healthy foods. The class has been studying “Growing and Going Healthy.” The kids all got autographed player cards and were invited to try on the players’ equipment.
