Ian Laperriere Named Number 10 Tough Guy of the Week

(from FOXSports.com's NHL Tough Guy Tracker - 3/10/10)

An NHL tough guy isn't necessarily someone who goes out and beats the snot out of an opponent every night. Sure, goons like that still exist in the league, but an NHL tough guy is more than that. He is a player who will not only stand up for himself and/or his teammates, but will also play through and dish out pain or a game-changing check whenever his team needs him to do so. In the heat of the battle, sometimes players not known for their toughness get in on the action and either turn some heads or get their heads bashed in.

Each Wednesday, FOXSports.com's NHL Tough Guy Tracker spotlights those players and some of the best scraps from around the league.

Number 10: Florida's Gregory Campbell and Philadelphia's Ian Laperriere like to take care of business right away when their teams clash. Back on Dec. 21, the two dropped the mitts a little over a minute into the first period. Last Wednesday, the two combatants couldn't wait to get at one another's throats, locking horns just :03 into the contest.

Ian Laperriere earned his 13th assist of the season on a Blair Betts' goal, and picked up his 200th career fight in the first period of the game against Atlanta on Saturday, March 20, 2010.

"That pretty much shows that I have been around a long time," Laperriere said. "It is not something I came into the league thinking about. I guess I've had my share of fights. Fighting is part of my role to help my team win. I still think like that at 36. The day I change my mind I am going to have to retire because I won't be as effective."   --CSNPhilly.com, 3/20/10

Lappy Reaches Prestigious 200-Fight Milestone

(from The700Level.com blog - 3/21/10)

New to the team this year, Ian Laperriere has fast become a fan favorite in Philadelphia.

His signing was puzzling to some who wondered about adding penalty minutes to a team that couldn't afford to spend any more time shorthanded, but now that we've all seen up close how he actually gets those high PIM totals, none of us seem to mind too much. When you're trading in 5's instead of 2's, you can really rack them up...

Scrappy Lappy

(from Debbie Elicksen's "Inside the Locker Room" blog - 3/23/10)

Anyone who has seen Ian Laperriere play knows he's not known for his prolific goal scoring. Although he has occasionally posted some decent numbers, especially when he played in Colorado.

If you don't cheer for his team, you respect him, even though you can see he can be one of the most annoying players to play against.

What endears him to hockey fans is his scrappiness. You can see his nose has been broken a few times - something like six or seven times. He gave up on surgery after two. He's had his teeth stolen and never a day goes by without a scar or scratch...

It's All About Lappy

Excerpt from "Flyers Looking on the Light Side With Six Games Left"
(from the Philadelphia Daily News - 3/30/10)

It's been almost 6 years since Ian Laperriere last played for the Los Angeles Kings. But that hasn't stopped longtime Laperriere fan Karen Ellis from raising money for the Ronald McDonald House, which benefits families of children with cancer, with the help of the best fan club in the NHL. Ellis founded the fan club named "It's All About Lappy," and its Web site (www.itsallaboutlappy.com) has seemingly every picture, article and stat about Laperriere.

Ellis and her husband - who helped grow the club in Denver when Lappy played four seasons with the Avalanche - flew to Philly from LA this weekend to catch Sunday's win over the Devils.

They have raised more than $11,000 for the Ronald McDonald House by selling more than 700 T-shirts bearing the club's name to fans in 36 states, three provinces and eight countries around the world. The shirts haven't caught on with Flyers fans yet, but Kings fans wearing them flooded the Flyers' practice in LA back in November.

"It's a great charity, they do great work for kids," Laperriere said. "Karen and her family are great people and I'm really glad to work with them. If they can raise money for kids just by using my name, I'm all for it."

Guts and Glory

Excerpt from "Carcillo Suspended For Two Games"
(from the Bucks County Courier Times - 3/31/10)

To be willing to dive in front of one of Ilya Kovalchuk's Russian ballistic missiles, you have to be three things:
1. Competitive.
2. Courageous.
3. Crazy.

But that's what the Flyers' Ian Laperriere was Sunday night in the Flyers' 5-1 win over the Devils.

Just another day at the office for Laperriere, who makes blocking shots both a science and an artform...
