Does the NHL Have a Painkiller Problem?
(from the Red Light NHL Blog on SI.com - 9/6/11)
Ian Laperrière is a highly respected NHLer, a warrior and leader, a man who didn't fear the consequences of throwing his body at speeding pucks and who paid the price for it with lost teeth, lost vision and an entire lost season while he suffered from post-concussion syndrome. He certainly earned the 2011 Bill Masterton Trophy for his perseverance and dedication to hockey. And when he spoke last week on a Montreal radio station, reflecting on the NHL's dark summer, Laperrière raised a concern that should resonate throughout the hockey world, if only because of the messenger's credibility.
"Today the biggest problem, which isn't talked about...is pills. It's painkillers," Laperrière said...
How Hockey Got Hooked On Pills
(from the Globe and Mail - 9/2/11)
In a sport where pain is a constant companion, it's not that hard to find relief.
It seems self-medication, either with alcohol or pharmaceutical-grade opiates, may be as much a part of the good old hockey game as stitches and a gap-toothed smile...

Four Flyers Bit By the Acting Bug
(from the Official Website of the Philadelphia Flyers - 8/22/11)
Earlier this month, four members of the Philadelphia Flyers were bit by the acting bug. Ian Laperriere, Matt Carle, Scott Hartnell and James van Riemsdyk flew out to Los Angeles to shoot a scene in Judd Apatow's latest movie. The Flyers players had speaking roles in the movie that currently has a working title, "This Is Forty," starring Megan Fox, Wyatt Russell and Leslie Mann...

When a Flyers official heard that "40-Year-Old Virgin" director Judd Apatow was looking for a hockey player with no teeth for his new movie, he knew just who to recommend: Ian Laperriere.
The injured winger jumped at the opportunity and enlisted teammates Scott Hartnell, Matt Carle and James van Riemsdyk to accompany him to Hollywood for one 16-hour-day of shooting for Apatow's "This is Forty..."
Tough To Keep A Good Man Down
(from NHLPA.com - 8/15/11)
He's been bloodied and battered, literally, but in spite of all the pain endured and games missed, Ian Laperriere's love for the game of hockey hasn't changed at all.
For 1,083 National Hockey League regular season games, Laperriere, the 158th overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1992 NHL Draft, has shown up every night and every shift, doing whatever it takes to make an impact on the game...

Mike Richards - 'Laperriere guided me in the right direction'
(from MayorsManor.com - 8/6/11)
Just over a month has passed since an earthquake-like rumbling was felt around the National Hockey League, as the Philadelphia Flyers traded away two of their most important players.
From the moment he joined the Kings, Mike Richards has been asked a lot of questions about his now former teammate and best friend, Jeff Carter.
Yet, there's another person from that dressing room who helped play a small part in shaping him into the person he is today...
The Real Winners
Trial on the Isle check donated to American Legion Post 331
(from the Official Website of the Philadelphia Flyers - 8/4/11)
A day full of 'fun in the sun', a softball game, autographs and meet & greets certainly gave Flyers fans from all over, but particularly in Stone Harbor N.J. something to experience and get excited about for the upcoming 2011-12 season.
But the real winners of such an important day are the American Legion - Post 331 on the Island. They will receive a check for $5,000 raised during the event.
On behalf of Flyers charities, members of the Philadelphia Flyers in attendance for the check presentation were (from left to right): Flyers prospects Brandon Manning, Tom Sestito and Harry Zolnierczyk, forward Ian Laperriere, Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters, Jim McCrossin and his wife Robyn, American Legion Post 331 members Al Carusi and Kevin Coyle and Flyers prospect Tyler Brown.
Grand Lappy
(from the Official Website of the Philadelphia Flyers - 7/21/11)
Ian Laperriere is having one heck of a summer.
He kicks it off by winning the NHL's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey at the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas in June.
Not resting on his laurels, he helps run the annual summer Prospect Camp for a week of teaching on-the-ice, off-the-ice and even getting down and dirty with the Flyers hopefuls during a paintball game in early July.
Last Saturday night, Lappy was once again the face of the organization that he's come to care so much about by being the Grand Marshal in Ocean City's annual "Night in Venice" boat parade...

Lappy Keeps Going...
(from the Official Website of the Philadelphia Flyers - 7/16/11)
Throughout any career there are going to be bumps in the road, but for Ian Laperriere, those bumps happened to be on his face.
Over a year after getting hit in the face with a puck, Laperriere is still recovering from damage to his eye, which doesn't seem to be slowing him down. He cannot play hockey, yet, but that hasn't kept him off the ice. He is going to help the Flyers succeed one way or another, and since the beginning of the season, he has been mentoring young Flyers, helping them reach their full potential...
