Our Lappy Stories...2003 - 2004 Season
At a Staples Store opening, Santa Monica, CA, January 2004
I was very nervous and didn't say anything until he asked "How are you?" and my only answer was "Nervous..." He said "Why are you nervous?" and then my husband Tim took that picture...and that was the extent of the conversation.
Tip-A-King, 2004
So this time, I wanted to think of something better to say, so I decided to tell Lappy about the quiz I had given to my math class at LMU that week in which I had used his stats for a question on standard deviation. So we took the photo, and as he was signing a picture for me, I told him the story. His response was "My stats?? What did you use, my penalty minutes??" My answer, (and I was being completely sincere) was "No, I wanted to make it easier and have the students work with smaller numbers, so I used your shots on goal..." Oops, big mistake. He started giving me a really hard time, saying "come on, I have feelings too, you know..." I kept trying (unsuccessfully) to dig my way out of it, but he kept teasing me. Afterwards I walked over to Tim who had this look on his face like "what did you do??" and I sadly said "I hurt Lappy's feelings!!" Meanwhile Lappy was trying to get my attention to say he was just kidding. I was pretty devastated for a while, but now when I think about it, it was pretty funny...(and for the record, I used the penalty minutes for their next exam).
After Practice at Healthsouth, March 2004
After we took this picture, my mom mentioned the Tip-A-King story and he said "I remember--I'm still hurt..."
Getting my Laperriere jersey signed at Healthsouth, April 2004
He offered to personalize my jersey. It says--"To Karen, Thanks for your support! Ian Laperriere #22"
A few days later, my mom went down to the Kings' last practice of the season at Healthsouth and was able to have a bunch of players (Miller, Belanger, Fox, Holland, Carter, Dempsey, Cechmanek, Norstrom, Avery, Tripp, Visnovsky, Modry, Laperriere, Cowan, Klatt, Chartrand and Pirnes) sign this card for my 29th birthday... She also asked Lappy to sign this picture for me (it says "To Karen, Happy Birthday!"), and she decorated the frame too. Thanks, Mom!!
Sports Memorabilia Show, June 2004
He really liked my shirt! He called over to Luc Robitaille and said "Hey Lucky, check out her shirt!" Luc replied with "Yeah, my wife has one just like it..." Lappy came back with "You KNOW she has one just like it!" Also, Mom had Lappy sign a copy of the picture of her with him shown up above, and he was joking that he really does own more than one shirt, since he was wearing that same burgundy shirt again...
