Our Lappy Stories...2005 - 2006 Season
Avalanche at Ducks, November 18, 2005
OK, I spent WAY too much time painting that Avalanche symbol for the sign...but it paid off. We got to our seats (ebay--on the glass--$75 each--what a deal!) and I told Tim not to be surprised if I chickened out and didn't put the sign up because that's just how I am... So the Avs came out for warm-ups and Tim leaned the sign against the glass in front of us because he knew I was nervous. Lappy eventually saw it and he nodded at us in acknowledgement from over in the corner of the ice and we were very happy. We took the sign down and tried to keep it nice for the next night at Staples Center.
This time, my mom came to the game too. She and I went down to the ice on the Avs side for warm-ups, and Tim and his buddy stood behind us in their Laperriere and Blake Kings jerseys. I wore my Lappy shirt again and we leaned the re-assembled sign against the glass, which got us another tap on the glass (which made my mom very happy this time). After the game, some guy said "I like your shirt!" and I said "Thanks! So did Lappy!!"
Our First Trip to Denver--December 25-29, 2005
During this trip we went to two games (Avs/Coyotes and Avs/Kings) and one Avalanche practice. At the Avs/Kings game, Tim wore a Laperriere Kings jersey, and I wore a Laperriere Avs jersey. The games were fun--(Lappy scored an empty-netter at the Phoenix game)--but unfortunately on the day we went to watch the practice, Ian had the day off, and wasn't on the ice. I was disappointed, but we planned another trip as soon as we got home and hoped for better luck next time...
Our Next Trip to Denver--March 2-4, 2006 This time we went to the Avs/Blue Jackets game (Avs won 1-0) and an Avs practice... The good news is that Lappy was at practice this time! The better news is that he recognized us and waved!! The BEST news is that he sent the security guy to go get us while everyone was still practicing so that he could talk to us!!! I was completely in shock, but I think I kept it together pretty well, except for the one part in the middle of the conversation when I said "I can't believe you're standing here talking to us!!"
The other crazy part of the story is that he's checked out this site!! (I don't know if I should be thrilled or embarrassed...) Apparently he and I are the only two people who visit the site. :)
I also had my game-worn jersey signed after practice:
The whole thing was completely unexpected, and it was such an unbelievably nice gesture. (I was happy enough that he was actually AT the practice this time...) We hadn't talked to him since June 2004, so I was amazed that even with all the people he meets, he not only recognized us, but remembered we were from LA. It was such an honor. Needless to say, this trip definitely made up for the first one...
March 19, 2006--Avs at Kings Mom and I sat next to the Avs tunnel. Lappy never saw us but my shirt ended up on TV in Denver which led to the beginning of the It's All About Lappy Shirt Project.
March 22, 2006--Avs at Ducks
Tim, Mom, my sister and I had glass seats next to the penalty box...(again, very cheap on ebay). While we were in Denver, I had suggested to Lappy that he should beat up some Ducks and then come watch the game with us for a few minutes. He said that was a good idea... Too bad (for us) that he was on his best behavior and didn't get any penalties that night.
April 11, 2006--Avs vs. Coyotes The debut of the It's All About Lappy Shirts
The shirts got a great reaction from the team during warm-ups. Ian was nice enough to stop and take pictures with us and sign a few shirts after the game. And we made a bunch of wonderful new friends!!
